Scam Awareness for Landlords
Rental scams don’t just target students—landlords can also be at risk. Be cautious and informed when communicating with potential tenants.
Common Scams:
A prospective tenant offers to pay several months’ rent in advance using a cheque or money order, then asks you to refund part of the amount before the funds clear. The cheque later bounces
You’re contacted by someone posing as a student abroad who wants to secure a rental before arrival, often pushing to send money quickly
Tips to Protect Yourself:
Never refund money from a cheque or payment that hasn’t fully cleared
Avoid accepting overpayments under any circumstances
Do not release personal details or banking information via email
Be cautious of tenants unwilling to speak by phone or video chat
Require a signed lease and verify the identity of the tenant before financial exchanges
